'Wilbert said: you shouldn't do this. It's going to give you a lot of work', Dennis Broekema says with a laugh. Nevertheless, Broekema persevered and made sure that dozens of people with a mental disability could go to the movies on Friday night on a 'duo bike'.
The duo bike is a three-wheeler with two seats next to each other. The idea is that someone with a disability cycles together with a supervisor. 'It broadens the world of the clients', says Broekema. 'Clients are very often indoors.'
'Of course we will do that'
The idea for a drive-in cinema for tandem bicycles came from Wilbert Wolthers. The Stadjer himself regularly cycled with clients of the Cosis institution. When Wolthers came up with the idea of the drive-in cinema, it was laughed at, says colleague Broekema.
Wolthers died last spring at the age of 49 from cancer. On his deathbed, Broekema promised him that the drive-in cinema would come. 'I said: Of course we're just going to do it!'
Works well
Dozens of Cosis clients cycled in a procession to the Mediacentrale in Groningen on Friday afternoon to watch the film De GVR (Big Friendly Giant). Client Jeroen Viel thinks it's great. 'This is my first time on a tandem, but I'm really enjoying it.'
